The box came in the mail at the perfect time, because between Amy being so tired she doesn't know which end is up (her school has full day kindergarten, which is a fantastic program, but the long day really kicks her butt and lately she's been coming home so tired she randomly breaks into tears, and fighting a cold this week hasn't helped her at all), and Ben and Kate being little snot machines as the cold went through our house, I decided to keep our crankiness and germs to ourselves and skip going to our AWANA club last night. But to console Amy over staying home, we put together our gingerbread house.
However, it proved to be easier said than done, because the icing wouldn't stick. After three catastrophic collapses, and bedtime rapidly approaching, I finally pulled out my industrial hot glue gun and had at it...
May not end up on the cover of a Martha Stewart magazine, but it was ready to withstand the impacts of three little kids ready to slam candy on it. And of course, as soon as the candy was out of the wrappers, Ben had a mouthful.
They continued decorating in proper "1 for the house, 8 in my mouth" fashion, and eventually completed a house that looked like it got hit by a hailstorm of little candies...and they had a blast doing it.
It was also David's birthday, and even though he had to spend most of the evening locked in our computer room taking an online final for one of his classes, when he finally emerged triumphant with a 95% on his test, we had birthday cake and the kids presented the house in as a birthday present built in his honor.
(His hand is in Ben's face to keep the kid from grabbing the candles)
And so ends the saga of our families' first gingerbread house...maybe next time I'll figure out a way to put it together without the hot glue gun!
